Steve Garry's Video Blog

What follows is an informal web log in which we comment on important issues for Canadians.

Note that this blog, especially the video component, rarely discusses "current events". It is more the founder's musings on different aspects of democracy, party development and policy. Therefore, the original entries are usually as topical today as they were when first produced.

Please don't hesitate to send your comments.

Presentation "Ceremony"

In our video blog, the present key personnel of the Party meet and, in good humour, exchange ceremonial gifts (00:01:35)

The Story of Demmy:  Check here for the full story of our political party mascot

"The Spark"

In our video blog, the political director describes how a single "spark" might help bring direct democracy to Canada (7:45 minutes)

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

Supporting Documents:  Democracy Party Fact Sheet

Comic Relief:  Check this for a humorous "out take" or on YouTube

The "Empathy Gene"

In our video blog, we recognize that Canadians are a very empathetic lot, but we need a better way to ensure our taxes help those truly in need. The "MOAA" will help with that (11:35 minutes)

Note: An abbreviated version of this video (10 minutes) is also available on YouTube

Collective Bargaining for Canadian Voters

In our video blog, we draw an analogy between individual worker's rights to bargain collectively against an all-powerful "boss", and voters' rights to challenge the political class in this country (10:40 minutes)

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

Supporting Document:  Fundamentals of Democratic Reform

Adopt-a-Lawsuit Program Personalizes the Pain

In our video blog, the writer suggests that it's unfair for taxpayers to be on the hook for the countless lawsuits our government faces, and suggests some alternatives (12 minutes)

Note: An abbreviated version of this video (7 minutes) is also available on YouTube

Adopt-a-Grant Program Personalizes the Waste

In our video blog, the political director explains how we can all break free of the lethargy and tolerance of wasteful government if we consider how long it takes each of us to pay for a single silly handout (5:45 minutes).  Alan Didd (Dec-5-07) makes a brief "cameo" appearance!

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

"Hedge Your Bets"

In our video blog, we describe why many voters will prefer the Democracy Party as their first ballot choice, but that our Party should be at least every other Canadian's second choice (9:15 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

An associated video, "The Piece of Paper" (Nov-14-07) can also be viewed.

“Democracy” or “Democratic”

In our video blog, we consider how the "end" may justify the "means" as our political party, whose goal is democratic rights for all Canadians, ponders how "democratic" it can run itself as it faces powerful headwinds, challenges and criticisms that make change to the system nearly impossible (15:45 minutes).

Supporting Documents:  Democracy Party Fact Sheet

A Special Festive Edition of the Blog:  The Story of Demmy

In our video blog, celebrating the holiday season, we tell you the happy story of Demmy the Democracy Beaver (10:00 minutes).

Hear what a real beaver sounds like, here:

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

What does Climate Change have to do with Democracy?

In our video blog, we say there's nothing wrong with "making money" on Climate Change, but there's plenty wrong when citizens, who pay for everything, are not in on the decision-making for such a momentous change to their lives (11:15 minutes).

Note:  An abbreviated version of this video (10 minutes) is also available on YouTube

The Definition of Democracy?

In our video blog, the founder/political director discusses the wisdom (and jeopardy) of political parties "defining" democracy for the people (6:15 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

Supporting Document:  Fundamentals of Democratic Reform

The Fable of "Alan Didd"

In our video blog, the legend of Aladdin and his Magic Lamp serves as the basis of a tale of a voter outsmarting a politician who thinks "politics as usual" is how it always has to be (9:00 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

Supporting Documents:  Democracy Party Fact Sheet

More Questions from a Cynical Public

In our video blog, the political director fends off the idea that forming a lobby group or running off to court would be better ways to bring democratic reform to Canada (2:55 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

"Making a Statement?"

In our video blog, we debate the lazy concept of "not voting" as a strategic choice in a general election (4:00 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

“We have election campaigns to discuss issues, why do we need anything else?”

In our video blog, the founder says that elections are great for many things, but for debating individual issues referendums are better (4:10 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

"We already have M.P. Recall!"

In our video blog, like offering a bone to a dog or catnip to a cat, a Recall policy to let Canadians fire their Members of Parliament is an easy sell (6:00 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

Interesting tidbit:  Members of the House of Commons who were Suspended from their Caucus or who Quit their Caucus

The "Piece of Paper"

In our video blog, we orientate website visitors to the key imperative in building this or any new party:  The Elections Canada declaration form, required from 250 supporters (9:15 minutes).

Note: This simplified version of this video (6 minutes) is also available on YouTube

Supporting Document:  Get the Declaration

“l”iberal, “c”onservative … or “d”emocrat

In our video blog, the founder AKA "Political Director" recounts the most common questions received from visitors to the Party's public exhibits and fair booths (14:15 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube:  Part 1 and Part 2

Supporting Document:  Fundamentals of Democratic Reform

"Poll Day"

In our video blog, the founder discusses the power of political polling and suggests voters might deserve a break, and more of an opportunity to think on their own, leading up to Election Day (14:45 minutes).

Comic Relief:  Check this for a humorous "out take" or on YouTube

The "Political Power Meter"

In our video blog, we offer a bit of comic relief as well as a chance for viewers to contribute to the Party by using their artistic prowess to improve our "Political Power Meter" chart (5:45 minutes).

Supporting Document:  "Political Power Meter"

Downloadable Source File (zipped in MS Excel 97 format):  powermeter.zip

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

The Silly Season

In our video blog, we use the simple example of our "Political Power Meter" chart to illustrate how we must take advantage of every direct democracy opportunity we're allowed -- and that general elections are presently our ONLY such opportunity (10:45 minutes).

Note:  We have uploaded a 10 minute version of this video to YouTube

Supporting Document:  "Political Power Meter"

Your Vote, My Vote

In our video blog, we challenge the solitary hold on decision-making that "representative democracy" has in Canada. Naturally, we suggest that "direct democracy" should play a complementary role (16:50 minutes)

Supporting Documents:  Democracy Party Fact Sheet and "Who has the Power"

Protests, Occupations and the Rule of Law

In our new video blog, the founder bemoans the ever-increasing level of militancy in protest movements.  This is inevitable in a democracy requiring medical attention where it so difficult for the citizens to effect change any other way (18:00 minutes).

Note:   In a smidgeon of irony, two-thirds of the way through the film shoot I was evicted from my initial location by parking lot security.  I certainly wasn't attempting to "occupy" the parking lot!  My thanks for their courtesy as they reluctantly, it seemed, carried out their task!

Leadership:  or, "I don’t know enough about the Issue!"

In our new video blog, we discuss how the tandem of Preston Manning and Ross Perot shook up the "establishment", and that we should think about doing it again (14:15 minutes).

Note:  We have uploaded a 10 minute version of this video to YouTube

How Direct Democracy Should Work in Canada

In our new video blog, the founder and political director describes how referendums, one type of direct democracy, could be implemented across Canada (14:30 minutes).

Supporting documents:  The Direct Democracy Flowchart and the Fundamentals of Democratic Reform

(Three or four times the "political breezes" blow in from the North and drown out the microphone. Subtitles are included on these occasions.  We apologize for any inconvenience.)

Remember the Golden Rule

In our new video blog, we look at the danger of laws of "biblical" importance that surmount every consideration, even democracy itself (18:00 minutes).

Supporting Document:  Democracy Party Fact Sheet

"Shut Down The Supreme Court!"  (Not!)

In our new video blog, the founder discusses how Canada will work best if there is an equal partnership between the Courts, the Government and the Citizens (5:00 minutes).

Note: If it cannot be viewed in your browser, this video is also available on YouTube

The Importance of Elections in a Democracy

In our new video blog, the founder discusses how elections are struggles for power between citizens, and politicians and their allies.

We recommend that every citizen who has the opportunity to vote in an election campaign -- federal, provincial or municipal -- view this video to understand the power they hold in their hands. (12:00 minutes)

Remembrance Day Message from the Founder

Direct Democracy:
Fairness and Accountability in Action

(View, print and download our poster "A Path to Balance & Change in Canada" here)

While Canadians will create their own direct democracy system -- and we trust they will enjoy this empowering exercise, using a referendum to create a referendum law -- the Democracy Party is pleased to present our initial plan for implementing this system in Canada.

The link, above, will display a concise yet detailed description of how the Courts, our Government and ordinary voters can together build a better, fairer political and decision-making system at the national level.

Other website pages can be referred to for more specifics, especially What We Will Do and What We Don't Do, which describes the types of questions Canadians should and shouldn't tackle using these tools.

Demmy Gives his Prognostications (2008)

As promised on the Donation page, our Party's friendly mascot, Demmy the Democracy Beaver, has emerged from his dam with his predictions for seat totals in the upcoming election.

Do you agree with them?  Demmy spent a lot of time chewing over these numbers, but his biggest hope is that Canadians get a government that works as hard as they do!

At first, Demmy thought that this was the "unnecessary" election.

Now he thinks it should be called the "Gotcha" election.

Every day, he was disappointed to see statements or emails brought up from years ago that sent everybody into an apology frenzy!  Demmy just hopes nobody ever finds out about that chip he put into Granma's old oak tree when he was a little toddler beaver!

Most everybody in this election will be where they were at the end of the last government.  The Tories won't get a majority -- Demmy likes that because he doesn't think anybody should get a majority unless they get 50 percent of the vote!

His friends in the Green Party will win a couple of seats out West, but their leader Liz May will come up a little short in Nova Scotia.  Too bad, Demmy loves his own Mom, and he knows Liz, as a mom, would have scolded the boys in Parliament when they got out of hand like they do sometimes.

Demmy hopes this government lasts four years this time and that everybody can cooperate to fixing our economy and environment!

Demmy Gives his Prognostications (2006)

As promised on the Donation page, our Party's friendly mascot, Demmy the Democracy Beaver, has emerged from his dam with his predictions for seat totals in the upcoming election.

Do you agree with them?  Demmy spent a lot of time chewing over these numbers, but his biggest hope is that Canadians get a government that works as hard as they do!

He doesn't think the increased Tory support in Quebec will translate into lots of seats for Stephen -- the federalist vote in that province will be split and Gilles will be the beneficiary.

Across most of the country, Demmy thinks the NDP support "holds" this time and Leader Jack will be rewarded with more seats.  However, at least 30 Conservative seats are won by close margins when the Left-paw votes are split by Liberals, NDP and Greens.

Demmy doesn't much care for partisan politics and is quite pleased when Bev the Independent wins her seat in Churchill, Manitoba.

Maybe most of all, Demmy's very happy that the first Green M.P. is voted in because they've promised to help him keep his lake clean!

As for Liberal Leader Paul, this is a great opportunity to rebuild his dam -- our mascot knows lots about that.

Beyond Election Day, our masticating mascot figures the Tories will be able to generate 20 or more votes from a cross-section of opposition parties to pass lots of useful legislation.  This will enable a peaceful, productive minority government for a couple of years, and there's nothing wrong with that, says Demmy!
